DPF Cleaning

What is DPF Cleaning?

DPF cleaning involves the use of aqueous cleaning technology and specialist chemicals to reduce the soot emissions generated by your engine.

Usually, your DPF removes soot automatically using passive regeneration. Our cleaning service removes the excess soot that is preventing regeneration from taking place. Once the clean has succeeded, the subsequent storage of soot should begin to disappear and regenerate naturally.

How does DPF cleaning work?

Depending on the mileage of the vehicle or how blocked the DPF is, we will use a sophisticated cleaning and drying procedure to remove the excess soot and ash from within the DPF. This includes the use of specialist chemicals that won’t cause damage to any other components of your vehicle. After the clean, we will test your vehicle to ensure the procedure was successful.

What causes a diesel particulate filter blockage?

Short journeys at low speeds are the prime cause of blocked diesel particulate filters. This is why car makers often go as far as recommending city-bound short-hop drivers choose a petrol car instead of diesel (and it’s why diesels are something of a rarity in the city car sector).

Other things that are bad for DPFs include poor servicing. A diesel particulate filter on a poorly serviced car may fail sooner than a well maintained one, generally, they should last for at least 100,000 miles.

It’s important you use the right type of oil as well – some oils contain additives that can actually block filters.

Performance modifications can damage a diesel particulate filter, as can using low-quality fuel and even running the car frequently on a low fuel level as the car may avoid DPF regeneration in order to save fuel.

Reasons to Clean your DPF

  •  Fuel Economy
When you keep your filter clean, you’ll get better fuel economy. The DPF is part of your engine’s exhaust system, and even if it’s only partially clogged, it increases back pressure in the engine. This affects your fuel economy.
  • Performance
Regular DPF cleaning keeps your engine running smoothly. In fact, unless the filter is working at 100 percent your engine performance suffers
  • Prevent Replacement
Diesel particulate filters are expensive, and if you don’t keep them clean, they can become damaged. When this happens, you have to replace them.
  • Increase Resale Value
It’s important to keep complete and accurate records of your truck maintenance. When a truck has a good maintenance record (that includes DPF cleaning when called for), you’ll get more for your truck at trade-in time.
  • All Filters Will Eventually Clog
When your DPF works perfectly, it burns off hydrocarbons and particles in the exhaust, and this causes ashes to slowly build up. DPF cleaning removes these ashes and lets the filter work in the most efficient manner.
  • Stop and Go Driving
If your truck makes frequent deliveries and a lot of city driving, you’ll need to have the DPF cleaned often. Stop and go driving causes more exhaust particles and makes it harder on the filtration and regeneration processes.
  •  Engine Warranty
If you don’t take proper care of your engines, it could void the manufacturer’s warranty. When you come to SCM Performance, you enjoy top-quality service by certified professionals.
